a beautiful mellow
On the occasion to celebrate a joyous 50th Birthday we had been fortunate indeed to sample such a whisky and my word what a wonderful dram! Nose: Complex and multi-layered, so much going on here. A smoky, demerara sweetness with undertones of raisins and dates. Rich fruit cake sweetness with a hint of citrus and orange marmalade all in harmony with the sherry. Taste: Velvet smooth, subtle, gentle with complex flavors. Caramel, molasses with incense infused wood. A hint of pears and cloves. All the layers are in perfect harmony with the sherry flavor. Finish: Long, velvet soft and smooth. This is a beautifully balanced whisky. A truly magnificent treat. Nosing the empty glass: Like walking through the isles of an old church and being surrounded by incense infused oak. In one word - Heavenly! Looking forward to trying more!

I was given some of Abbey Whisky's 'Secret Cask' 50 year old by a friend at Christmas and I have to say it is a stunning dram. It's a big, meaty whisky but it carries some beautiful subtleties and has real panache. Smoky, caramel molasses, gingerbread, nutty, prune and demerara, hints of peat - all flavours that bounce out at you. I'm sure it's spent some time in Oloroso casks as the sherry intensity underlies the whole combination. Great length and wonderful lasting flavours on the finish too. If you can you should definitely try this. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on some of the 30 and 40 yo...
