Hiram Walker of Canada took charge of Ardbeg Distillery in 1976. During his time in charge, the malting’s were closed along with 3 warehouses demolished, then finally the distillery closing circa 1989.
Again Ardbeg faced a bleak future, with lack of interest and investment in the Distillery. The Distillery opened once again in 1989 when Allied Vinters took charge. Production barley got started with only a very small production taking place. Once again Ardbeg Distillery fell silent in 1996.
Fortunes changed when Glenmorangie bought the Distillery the following year. With investment and care induced Ardbeg fortunes have turned. An excellent visitor center, the old kiln café offering remarkably good food, along with staff that make you feel very welcome, make whisky fans from all over the globe wanting a piece of Ardbeg.
After surviving such difficult times Ardbeg Distillery has now been rejuvenated into one of the best and exciting distilleries in Scotland.
Ardbeg single malt whisky; heavily peated, pungent and best of all smokey!
A wonderful dram, with so much to offer its surely here to stay for many years to come.
