Tomatin Cu Bocan

IMG_6365Recently we received a somewhat mysterious sample. All that was contained was a rather tasty looking dram, tucked away in a small velvet bag along with note stating - 'Join us on Twitter for the exclusive unveiling. 3/9/13 at 7pm @TOMATIN1897 - #CuBocan' Tomatin is traditionally unpeated, however for one week every year they distil a peated malt. This year that spirit has been used as part of the distilleries latest release, Tomatin Cu Bocan. A lightly peated single malt (15 PPM) matured in a combination of virgin oak, bourbon and sherry casks... The story behind Cù Bòcan.... Cù Bòcan has stalked residents of the remote Highland village of Tomatin for centuries, his legend embellished by the hellhound's increasingly fractious behaviour. Sightings are rare, once in a generation, always terrifying. A distillery worker, out walking late, was once relentlessly pursued by an imposing black beast, steam spiralling from flared nostrils, teeth bared. Compelled beyond all natural reason to feel the hound's dense fur he stopped and reached out, hand trembling, only to see the ghostly spectre - Cù Bòcan - dissolve before his eyes leaving nothing but a vacuum of deathly silence and an inky blue cloud of smoke, soon spirited away across the peat moorland… There is also a short film which introduces the story behind Tomatin Cu Bocan... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ4R-Mseq8I Tomatin Cu Bocan / Non chill filtered / 46% vol / 15PPM / Batch Releasecubocan Abbey Whisky Tasting Notes Nose: Sweet smoke, lemon & grapefruit zest combined with a hint of nutty notes that linger nicely. Sweeter notes coming through once heated a little... Toffee biscuits with hints of cream. Palate: Feels very light, the sweet smoke remains. Bitter coffee with hints of warm spice, chilli & white pepper. Getting a mineral aftertaste combined with light notes of tropical fruits. Finish: Sweet smoke & slight mineral notes linger. Overall: A very light, easy summer drinking dram. Would love to try this at cask strength.
