Tasting Notes

Benromach 15 Year Old - Abbey Whisky Tasting Notes

Nose: Smoke and ginger coming through, but a lot slower than the 10 year old. Feels rather sophisticated, a lot more defined and delicate flavours on the nose. Orange peel, figs, prunes, cedar, a little 'nutty'. Lot's of lovely sherried notes. Can't help but think this dram would go really well with a strong blue cheese & honeycomb? Debatable, must try this next time I have some blue cheese to hand...

Palate: Lots of spice, ginger, white pepper on first taste. Not as much smoke. A little fight going on with the rich fruity/sherried notes trying to push to the front of the spice, but struggling to make way! Figs, soaked sultanas, orange peel, dark chocolate, burnt sugar. Pepper still lingering in the background.

First of all, a big thank you to the Abbey team for cracking good service (an amazing 24 hour delivery from Dunfermline to my doorstep in faraway East Sussex) and the best price on the Net.
As to the Benromach 15 – this is beautifully crafted, with a deft touch of smoky peat to go with the light fruit, vanilla and hint of nuttiness. As expected, much gentler than any Islay that I’ve tasted, but not as soft and warm as, say, Talisker 10 or Balvenie Peat Week. Perhaps the sherry butts were more Fino than Oloroso? A very enjoyable dram, with its own, distinct character.

Excellent whisky and great service from Mike. Thanks very much for all your help.

A great dram with lots of flavour. A nice delicate smokiness but still enough to give it that great speyside taste. I've had several Benromach malts now and they're all different but distinct, and this is probably the best.

A lovely step up from the magnificent 10. More crisp, more refined and delicate but still full of great flavour. Great value.
