Blue Hanger 14th Edition: The Return of a Legend
After a decade of silence, one of Scotch whisky's most quietly revered blended malts makes its long-awaited return. The Blue Hanger 14th Edition is here and it was worth every year of the wait.
A Name Steeped in History
To understand Blue Hanger, you have to go back to Georgian London, to the cobblestoned elegance of St. James's Street and to one of its most colourful regulars.
William Hanger, 3rd Lord Coleraine (1748–1794), was not a man who blended into the background. Known throughout fashionable London circles for his impeccably tailored, brilliantly blue wardrobe, he became something of a legend in his own lifetime, a true Georgian dandy at the apex of style and social grace. His nickname, "Blue Hanger," followed him everywhere. And one of the places he frequented most loyally was the shop at 3 St. James's Street: Berry Bros. & Rudd.
It's a fitting tribute, then, that Berry Bros. & Rudd, one of Britain's oldest and most storied wine and spirit merchants chose to name one of their most distinguished whisky creations in his honour. The Blue Hanger series is more than a product; it is a direct line between the craft of Georgian-era connoisseurship and the finest traditions of modern Scotch whisky blending.
A Series Built on Rarity
The Blue Hanger series first emerged in the 1990s in deliberately small quantities, conceived as a limited edition blended malt designed to appeal to the discerning palate. From the outset, the philosophy was clear: no two editions would be alike. Each release draws on a unique combination of hand selected casks, ensuring that every numbered edition stands entirely on its own terms.
That numbered structure, 6th, 7th, 10th and so on has become part of the Blue Hanger identity. Collectors and enthusiasts have long tracked these releases with genuine anticipation, knowing that when a new edition appears, it represents a singular, unrepeatable expression. The series quietly built a cult following among those who value subtlety and depth over spectacle, whisky drinkers who understand that true complexity rarely shouts.
Which makes the 14th Edition's arrival all the more significant. The previous release was over ten years ago. A decade is a long time in whisky and in that time the Blue Hanger name has only grown in stature.
The 14th Edition: What's in the Bottle
The 14th Edition stays true to everything that has defined the series while showcasing Felix Dear's, (Berry Bros. & Rudd's Spirits Curator), exceptional eye for cask harmony.
This release is a marriage of aged malt whiskies, the youngest of which clocks in at 26 years old, with the oldest components reaching 34 years. Seven casks were selected in total: six ex-bourbon hogsheads and a single ex-sherry butt. It is that solitary sherry cask that threads a golden seam of dried fruit richness through the entire vatting, providing structure and depth without ever dominating the more delicate bourbon influenced layers.
Only 2,500 bottles exist. At 45.6% ABV and bottled at natural colour without chill-filtration, every aspect of this whisky has been handled with care and restraint.
Felix Dear’s full Tasting Notes:
Nose: Milk chocolate and soft caramel ease into citrus peel and stewed fruits, the sherry cask influence adding quiet depth
Palate: Has an unctuous oiliness, carrying barley sweets and orchard fruit, with caramel wrapping around it all.
Finish: A dusting of baking spice adds lift, leading to a finish which gently trails into mellow chocolate and sweet fruits notes.
