Chapter Thirty Four of Whiskyland heads for the Highlands, and for a distillery that has always sent most of its spirit out inside someone else's bottle. Tomatin sits in the hills south of Inverness, close enough to the Speyside boundary to share something of its neighbours' fruit forward character. Founded in 1897, it expanded relentlessly through the second half of the twentieth century until it was reckoned the largest malt distillery in Scotland, with the overwhelming majority of that spirit disappearing into blends. Casks from the 1990s rarely made it out under the distillery's own name, which is precisely why independent bottlers have come to prize them.

A single refill hogshead, thirty one years, no finishing and nothing borrowed. Bottled at natural cask strength of 57.9%, with an outturn of 171 bottles.
